MEET OUR EMERGING LEADER AWARD WINNER FOR 2019

WISE Charitable Trust has been a proud supporter of the Waitara High School Senior Prize giving for many years, providing financial scholarships to students who have gone above and beyond in their school and community. In 2019, the Trust introduced the Emerging Leader, Emerging Tradie and the Tū Tangata Taiohi o Whaitara awards.

For the Emerging Leader award, the Trust looked at someone that demonstrated great leadership by building self-confidence and strengthening self-believe in others. The inaugural Emerging Leader winner for 2019 is Ruby Hutchieson. Ruby has been an outstanding role model for younger students at the school and to her peers. She is a very dedicated and motivated individual not only in the classroom but also on the sports field.

Ruby has enjoyed great success in her sports, representing Taranaki in Rugby, 7’s, Netball and Touch Rugby. She is an avid surfer and was a recipient of the C.T Campbell Cup School Surfing in 2019.

She comes from a family of sports enthusiasts which was instrumental in her love for sports and community leadership. Hard work, determination and discipline is vital to succeed, particularly on and off the sports field. Ruby’s mother inspired her work ethic and through her can-do attitude, Ruby has learned that you can achieve anything you put your mind to. Her whānau, Hapu and Iwi are very proud of her and we are all excited to see her grow and flourish into great ambassador and leader for Waitara

As the Emerging Leader Award winner, WISE Charitable Trust covered the travel and equipment expenses in order for her to attend her trip to Outward Bound in Marlborough in September. She will participate in a 21 day course aimed at building her independence and leadership qualities, which will benefit her tremendously as she works towards her dream of becoming a police officer.

Ruby has accepted the invitation from the Trust on her return, to speak of her experiences at Outward Bound, with an aim to inspire and encourage further community investment in leaders of tomorrow.

Healthy Homes - Summer Edition

Summertime is the most carefree season of the year. Our concerns about heating, insulation, wet weather and ventilation become problems of the past. The warmer months is actually a great time to make your home as healthy as possible before winter kicks in. We have put together a couple of easy things you and your whanau could do to make your home healthier.   Tip 1 – Wash curtains and heavy blankets Curtains are susceptible to grow mould due to the close proximity to windows. Like most things, once mould grows it becomes difficult to remove. Thoroughly wash curtains, heavy blankets, duvet inners and quilts and leave outside to dry. This will allow fresh air to flow in and out the fibres. This needs to be done regularly, so keep an eye out for sunny days during winter as well. Tip 2 – Airing the house   Keeping windows and doors is the easiest (and cheapest) way to ventilate your home. During the colder months, we tend to keep everything closed to keep the heat in.
