Healthy Homes - Summer Edition

Summertime is the most carefree season of the year. Our concerns about heating, insulation, wet weather and ventilation become problems of the past. The warmer months is actually a great time to make your home as healthy as possible before winter kicks in. We have put together a couple of easy things you and your whanau could do to make your home healthier.

Tip 1 – Wash curtains and heavy blankets

Curtains are susceptible to grow mould due to the close proximity to windows. Like most things, once mould grows it becomes difficult to remove. Thoroughly wash curtains, heavy blankets, duvet inners and quilts and leave outside to dry. This will allow fresh air to flow in and out the fibres. This needs to be done regularly, so keep an eye out for sunny days during winter as well.

Tip 2 – Airing the house

Keeping windows and doors is the easiest (and cheapest) way to ventilate your home. During the colder months, we tend to keep everything closed to keep the heat in. Doing this increases moisture levels and creates mould and musty smells. Having a cross-breeze helps with moving fresh air in and out. Leaving wardrobe doors or linen cupboards slightly open keeps fabrics fresh.

Tip 3 – Cleaning washing machine regularly

Cleaning out washing machines is probably the most forgotten chore. Bacteria from dirt and detergent build up along with the wet environment, is the perfect breeding place for mould. These mould spores get into clothes and sheets which can be very irritating on skin, eyes and breathing. To clean machines, use a cloth to wipe away dirt and then do a hot cycle with no detergent. After washing, keep the door/lid open to allow the washing machine to properly air out.

Tip 4 – Trimming trees and bushes

Large trees and bushes can block natural sunlight. This leaves houses damp and dark, which can spur on mould growth. Trimming branches and bushes brightens the home and maximises daytime light. Please use appropriate safety gear when trimming trees. If you have larger trees, contact professional services.

Try these tips and we are sure you will notice a big difference. Insulation is not only for heating but it also keeps your home cool during summer. If you want to skip the winter insulation wait, get in touch with us to book a free, non-obligation assessment. Eligible homeowners in Taranaki might be able to get ceiling and underfloor insulation for FREE.
